Asha Trust

We run elders projects in several communities, supporting frail and isolated elders with a befriending service. .

Mrs Perera lives alone outside Colombo. Her daughter moved to another part of the country with her husband. She sees her daughter and grand-children several times a year, but she misses them terribly. Mrs Perera also has a son, who lives nearby, but the relationship has broken down and mother and son no longer speak to each other. She lives on the money her daughter sends.

Through the Asha Trust elders project, Mrs Perera is visited regularly by a local community worker. The project provides her rice, lentils, sugar, tea and other essential food items and ensures that she has access to healthcare. Crucially, this regular visit provides Mrs Perera friendship and support, the certainty that someone will sit and listen to her and share her joys as well as struggles and link her to her neighbours and others in similar situations.
