The Tsunami disaster

Sri Lanka was one of the countries worst affected by the tsunami on 26 December 2004. At least one million people were directly affected, with more than 30 000 people killed and thousands more missing. Along the northern, southern and eastern coastlines, the giant waves left a trail of destruction up to two kilometres inland in some places.

The worst ever disaster to hit Sri Lanka in its history has not only rendered a vast number of people homeless, but has deprived them of their livelihood. The entire coastal area has been devastated and the worst affected are the people of the Eastern, Southern and Western coastal belt. Houses were flattened and boats of the fishermen swept away or smashed as towering 30 foot high wave after wave struck in all its fury turning the land into part of the sea..
