Children with disabilities face even greater challenges in the communities where we work. Families struggle to find support.
Asha supports a school called RCCI (Rehabilitation Centre for Communication Impaired) which offer specialist education for children with speech and language difficulties. The school is recognised for being a centre of excellence, founded by Shiranee Joseph de Saram, a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist, who helped to establish speech therapy in Sri Lanka. We support a programme of care and support for 15 autistic children at RCCI.
The community workers in Athidiya are keen to set up a special needs project for the 27 children with disabilities in this community. They have been struggling to find a suitable space. They tried to run a programme in a building two kilometres away, but families found it difficult to get their children there and attendance dropped off. They believe they have found the solution – to build their own centre in the heart of Athidya. |
