The Community Centre Project
The community workers Asha supports have been working from a very small centre. They cram in over 60 children into a space of a small living room, running after school clubs, women’s groups and counselling sessions. For two years they looked for alternative rentable space, but came to realise that in a very poor community like Athidya, all the buildings are small – no one has the resource to put up a big building. The team found a piece of land right in the heart of the community, and we all then began the task of raising money – first to buy the land, and then to put up the building.
Asha supporters have raised an amazing £20,000 – through walking, cycle rides, quiz nights, auction events, half-marathons and much else! The building is well on the way now and plans are under way for all the activities which will be delivered from the new centre.
